Sky Diamond in the Studio

Sky Diamond and I have worked together a couple of times and, each time, it is a different adventure. We first collaborated in September of 2016. It is hard to believe it has been almost two years! Last week, we decided to tackle the studio, aiming at a few looks and one of my personal projects.

We started with a little window light. I already had things set up, so it seemed a natural place to begin. This is always fun as there is absolutely nothing natural about the light in my windowless studio. Creating the set to mimic true window light takes some doing and some special instructions. The biggest issue: Don’t lean against the “wall” because it is not a real wall.

We quickly pivoted to a gel setup that I have used before and really enjoyed. Swap out the “window” for a couple of speed lights with colored gels and add a bit of color. Speaking of color, we made sure to switch our multi-color lighting to yellow to add a few images to one of my current projects. It was a solid proof of concept, proving that my studio walls were a fine substitute for a colored backdrop if the proper lighting techniques are followed.

All in all, we had fun and played around with several different setups. From “natural” light to overblown backlighting, we did it all in my humble home studio. Once again, I have to give thanks to all the wonderful mentors out there who have helped inspire me over the years.

Working with Sky Diamond was fun and primed me to have some more fun. If you are looking to add to, update, or start your portfolio, check out my work and hit me up. I love working with new people and would be happy to talk about our collaborative options!
